Sarah Palin: The Sound and the Fury

Former Republican Vice Presidential Candidate Sarah Palin speaks at the "Restoring Honor" rally at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington on August 28, 2010.

Even as Sarah Palin’s public voice grows louder, she has become increasingly secretive, walling herself off from old friends and associates, and attempting to enforce silence from those around her. Following the former Alaska governor’s road show, the author delves into the surreal new world Palin now inhabits—a place of fear, anger, and illusion, which has swallowed up the engaging, small-town hockey mom and her family—and the sadness she has left in her wake.

Custody Battle Between Bristol Palin & Levi Johnston Brewing

The custody battle between Levi Johnston and Bristol Palin became public last week when two Superior Court judges issued orders unsealing the court record and denying the use of pseudonyms to protect the feuding parents’ identities.

A Dec. 23 order from Judge Kari C. Kristiansen denied Palin’s motion to close the proceedings and opened the case file to public access, while an order issued the same day by Presiding Judge Sharon Gleason denied Palin’s request to use John and Jane Doe in place of Johnston’s and her own real names.

On Nov. 4, Palin filed for sole custody of Tripp Johnston-Palin, the former couple’s son, who celebrates his first birthday today. Kristiansen initially issued temporary orders limiting access to the case file and allowing the parties to file under pseudonyms.

Johnston wasn’t playing along, however. In an opposition to Palin’s motion for a gag order, Johnston’s attorney, Rex Butler, said: “Simply put, this matter is public in nature, the courts are not refuges for the scions of the elite to obtain private dispensation of their legal matters because the public at large has an interest in the proceedings.”

There’s another factor in the mix, of course: Palin’s mother, former governor Sarah Palin, with whom Johnston has repeatedly locked horns in the press, and from whom he claims to fear retaliation.

‘We’re Going to Court’: Sarah Palin to Face Legal Battle over Grandson

Relations between the former US vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin and Levi Johnston, the teenager who almost became her son-in-law, have deteriorated to the point that a court battle is now inevitable, he has told the Guardian.

The dispute is over Tripp, his infant son by Palin’s eldest daughter, Bristol: he claims Palin is preventing him from seeing the child.

“I’m up to the point where I can’t see my kid again. I’m done. I’m sure we’ll end up in court. We’re definitely going to court,” Johnston, 19, said in an interview in Anchorage, Alaska’s largest city.

Johnston was propelled to national and international media attention last September when it was revealed he had made Bristol, who was then 17 and still at school, pregnant.

Levi Johnston: The Father of Sarah Palin’s Grandson Embarks on Another Wild Ride, on His Terms

Levi Johnston

Levi Johnston is in the middle of a public relations blitz.

With the help of his handlers, attorney Rex Butler and private investigator turned body man Tank Jones, Levi’s everywhere. Us Weekly’s calling to find out if he’s dating the actress Jennifer Murphy (he’s not). He’s been featured in GQ magazine; there’s an upcoming Vanity Fair article coming out; Levi was the A1 story in last Sunday’s Anchorage Daily News, in Julia O’Malley’s column; and that doesn’t count the celeb mags and tabloids that he hasn’t even talked to. But Levi swears he doesn’t read any of the coverage.  “I don’t need to read it—I know all about me, I don’t need to read it again,” Levi says. “If something’s bad, [Rex or Tank] will tell me. They’ll read it. I’m not into that.”

Despite Levi’s ubiquity—the Tyra Banks show, two appearances on Larry King, the Today Show, the Early Show, the magazines—Tank and Rex swear they haven’t asked for any of the attention. “We’ve never picked up the phone and said, ‘hey, come do a story,’” Tank says. “Everybody’s pursued him.”

And what Levi and his handlers are doing is trying to turn a bad situation into a net positive for the 19-year-old from Wasilla who knocked up the wrong girl at the wrong time.

Now the plans include red carpet events in Los Angeles, acting in films, perhaps a reality show.

“Tell me when strangers start recognizing you,” I whispered to Levi Johnston in the noisy foyer of Glacier BrewHouse last week. He lifted his chin and let it fall in agreement but didn’t make eye contact.

“Most of the time,” he said, “they just stare.”
